Most often, people wonder why they have shims after their countertop has been installed. Actually, there is a reasonable explanation to that which is simply the fact the countertop is not leveled. And to avoid having an uneven working surface, shims are used to make the working surface even in other words, shims are used to level it out.

As you might have probably guessed, shims are very important to the final look of the surface and hence need to be installed with maximum precision and of course by professionals only.

A lot of times, cabinet companies and contractors try to get their fabricators to come and do the installation job and practically pressure their clients. This is very unprofessional because when the fabricator is done with the installation, they can’t tell the client that the cabinets are not leveled.

They actually disseminate this information for various reasons one of them being the fact that the cabinet, company or the contractor is their client.

However, if one seeking to get his countertop installed takes it to his own fabricators, then he will probably be told that there will be shims added because the cabinets are not leveled or will be told to tell the cabinet company or contractor to level it so there won’t be the need to use thick shims later on but instead thin ones that won’t be as visible as the thick ones.

Are Shims Avoidable?

In most cases unfortunately, the answer is no. The only thing to do as most often the countertops are not leveled is to opt for professionals that instead of installing thick shims, that over time cause pressure on the stone, will install thin ones that will do the job as well.

In many cases, people have found themselves stuck because; their contractors kind of imposed certain fabricators on them because of their business relationship. That of course is not right because the client deserves the best.

That simply highlights the fact that it is very important to work with professionals that value the satisfaction of their clients over profit because as mentioned earlier, thick shims cause pressure on the stone, causing it to lose its shape over time. A contractor knowing that fact but nonetheless allows the installation of such a shim is more profit focused than worried about the client’s satisfaction on the long run.

We hope we were able to help you with information about shims and the one that should be privileged over others. However, we recommend you call on professionals or at least before the installation, ask for thin shims to be installed instead of thick ones.
